An early morning altercation on Gratiot ended in the hospitalization of two men — one 27, the other 63 — who shot each other when the argument turned physical, police said.

The double shooting happened at 1:20 a.m. on the 14600 block of Gratiot, which is north of East Seven Mile on the city's east side.

Police say it started with a "large altercation" in a parking lot outside of a liquor store between two groups.

That's when a man who worked at the location, the 63-year-old, came out with a firearm and intervened.

A second man, the 27-year-old, pulled a gun, and the two men shot one another.

The older man was shot once in each leg. The younger man was shot in his torso.

The 63-year-old man ran back into the store, and medics transported him to an area hospital. The 27-year-old man fled on foot in an unknown direction, and was privately transported to the hospital.

Conditions were not available for either man.
