It's going to remain hot and steamy through the week with a chance of rain for July 4 Wednesday.

Metro Detroiters hoping for a respite from the hot temperatures over the weekend aren't going to see much relief anytime soon.

Temperatures in Metro Detroit topped out at 93 degrees Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, with a heat index of 101 and not much change in the forecast until a minor cold front drops the high to about 82 on Friday.

At Michigan State University, on Monday school officials warned of a mechanical failure on a boiler at the power plant. As a result, some rooms and offices across campus would be unable to regulate the air conditioning. The issue was expected to continue through July 8.

The weather was also unpleasant in Kent County, where thousands of people are without air conditioning after a weekend storm knocked out power.

Consumers Energy says some people won’t get their electricity back until Tuesday morning. More than 7,000 customers were out Monday in Kent County. Other outages were reported in Muskegon, Montcalm and Ottawa counties.

The high temperature in Grand Rapids is expected to be 85 Monday, but even more heat and humidity is expected Tuesday.

Sunday's 93 degrees, five short of the record set in 1931, should fall only to the upper 80s Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday should be a bounce to 92, said meteorologist Alex Manion from the weather service station in White Lake Township, followed by a drop to 89 on Thursday.

There's a faint chance of isolated showers Monday, he said, A chance of showers remained in effect Monday with a slightly greater possibility Tuesday, Manion said. Friday could start a stretch of days in the 80s with a corresponding drop in humidity.
