A 41-year-old man is recovering after being shot in his back and upper thigh Monday night on Detroit's east side, police said.

The shooting took place about 10:45 p.m. on the 7000 block of Varjo, which is north of East Davison and west of Van Dyke.

Officer Dan Donakowski, a Detroit police spokesman, said that when officers responded to the reported shooting, they found blood in the street and in the driveway where the victim ran from gunfire. Little else is known about the circumstances of the shooting.

Police describe the suspect as a black male, 35 to 40 years old, 6 feet tall, with dark skin and a slim build. He wore his braids in pigtails, along with a dark hat, a white T-shirt and red pants, and was armed with a handgun.

Police believe he may have been driving an older, dark-colored Buick.
