An 8-month-old boy is in critical condition after falling from a window Tuesday night on Detroit's east side, police said.

The fall took place about 9:35 p.m. on the 19000 block of Hickory, said Dontae Freeman, a Detroit Police Department spokesman. The area is south of East Seven Mile and west of Schoenherr.

The baby's mother told police she left her son in a window ledge with a box fan inside it. She went to go downstairs, then heard a thump, and found the baby outside, on the ground.

Police don't know how far the baby may have fallen. After being privately transported to an area hospital, the baby was listed in critical condition.
