Attendees of the Eastern Market Music Festival on Sunday can stop by to see some furry friends — and maybe take them home, too.

The Michigan Humane Society will showcase 50 adoptable cats, kittens, dogs and puppies for market shoppers between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The animals will be in Shed 5.

"People will be able to adopt pets right on site, and leave with them too," said MHS spokesman Shaun Bailey.

The Society joined "Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo" five years ago, but this is the first time they will be heading to Eastern Market.

"It’s also the first year MHS is taking as many animals as it takes to the zoo per day (50)," Bailey said. "The major difference is we’ll be the only shelter there; the zoo event features dozens."

This event runs concurrently with Eastern Market’s Music Festival, but volunteers don't believe the atmosphere will be an issue.

"The reason is animals are actually subjected to a fair amount of noise in shelters and retail stores, what with all the barking. That can be stressful, so the sooner we find them homes the better," he said.
