Man charged in Eastern Market spitting incident

Robert Stanzler, a man caught on tape spitting in the face of a security guard in Eastern Market, was charged with assault and battery, the Prosecutor's Office said Saturday, and he was suspended from selling merchandise at the market.

Stanzler, 50, owner of Detroit Mercantile Co. at Eastern Market, grew angered that people arriving at another event were parking on his property, and was filmed spitting in the face is security guard Ibrahim Faison, 29.

The incident took place about 9:30 a.m. on July 17, on the 3400 block of Russell. 

Faison turned over video of the incident to police, the prosecutor's office said.

Police arrested Stanzler that day, but released him the next day. He was charged three days later. 

Stanzler apologized for the incident, but was still suspended from selling his wares at Eastern Market; Carhartt, a clothing company for which he was a distributor, has told other media outlets that the clothing no longer will be sold at Detroit Mercantile.
