Detroit police are on the lookout for a man who stole a woman's car — and, the woman initially thought, her 7-year-old daughter — Tuesday evening at a Project Green Light location on the city's west side.

The car theft took place about 5:15 p.m. at a Valero gas station on the 12300 block of Dexter.

The victim, a woman whose age was not immediately available, went into the station to pay for gas, leaving her daughter inside her gold, 2004 Pontiac Montana minivan.

As she approached the counter to pay, she saw the van begin to pull away, and feared that along with the keys she left, her daughter was still inside.

But the girl was able to escape; she jumped out of the vehicle when the suspect got in the minivan. She was not harmed.
