A Belleville man has been charged in the hit-and-run of a Detroit Police officer on Saturday.

Jonathan David Cole, 19, was formally charged in court Tuesday with reckless driving causing serious impairment and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, resulting in serious impairment, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.

The reckless driving charge is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

A magistrate at the 36th District Court in Detroit ordered Cole held on a $150,000 bond and scheduled his next court appearance for next Tuesday.

The hit-and-run happened at about 2:40 a.m. Saturday in the 18000 block of West McNichols near Stahelin Avenue on the city's west side. Police were helping with a crowd control situation in the area.

Authorities accuse Cole of striking Officer Fadi Shukur, 30, as the officer walked to his vehicle.

Cole fled the scene, but later turned himself in at a Detroit Police precinct, officials said.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Saturday the officer, who has been on the force for about a year, suffered a brain injury and was in critical condition.
