Detroit police are investigating how a 51-year-old man came to be found dead in the middle of a street on the city's west side.

The man's death was discovered at about 3:25 a.m. at Plymouth Road and Rutherford, said Officer Dan Donakowski, a Detroit police spokesman. The area is just west of Greenfield and south of Interstate 96.

Police arrived to find the man dead in the middle of the street, and the early theory is that he was the victim of a hit-and-run. No vehicle make and model have been identified as yet, and the Wayne County Medical Examiner will have to determine the man's official cause of death.
