Detroit police continue to investigate a crash that killed a 3-year-old boy on the city's east side, officials said.

The crash happened at about 7 p.m. Thursday on Seven Mile and Hayes Street, according to Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, who said a burgundy minivan traveling eastbound on Seven Mile struck another vehicle, a gold Chrysler 300.

A 27-year-old woman was driving the minivan during the collision, police said. She had three children in the vehicle with her, a 3-month-old girl, the 3-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl.

The 3-year-old boy who was killed was in the rear of the minivan in a car seat when he was ejected from the vehicle in the crash, police said. The two other children also were properly restrained, they said.

Emergency medical technicians who were called to the scene transported the boy to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The other victims of the crash were privately taken to a hospital and Freeman said police did not have information on their injuries or their conditions at this time.

However, police officials said the 27-year-old driver was arrested after the crash and is suspected of driving impaired or intoxicated.

Police initially said the minivan was struck from behind by another vehicle, which fled the scene after the crash.
