A man was wounded Monday night after being shot by Detroit police on the city's northwest side, investigators said.

Authorities late Monday still were probing what led to the incident reported in the 20000 block of Asbury Park, said Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department.

The shooting took place about 10 p.m. It started when a group of men were gathered in the street on the 19000 block of Ardmore, and an officer saw a weapon in the suspect's waistband, said Detroit police spokesman Brian Warrick.

When he fled the scene on foot, officers chased him. He turned around and fired shots at the officers chasing him, Warrick said. The shots missed.

Officers shot back, hitting the suspect multiple times. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning. Police say his age is not immediately available.
