Armed robbery attempt ends in shootout on east side

Detroit police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that ended with both the victim and the suspect being shot and hospitalized early Wednesday on the city's east side.
It was just before 1 a.m., on the 14300 block of Lozier, when a 40-year-old man with a gun drawn approached a 55-year-old man and tried to rob him, said Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department. The area is north of Mack and west of Chalmers.
The intended robbery victim withdrew his own handgun and the two men shot each other in the struggle. The victim was hit in the buttocks and is in stable condition. The suspect was shot in his back and in his leg and left in stable condition — and in police custody.
Both men's guns were recovered at the scene.
