A 56-year-old man is in critical condition after being stabbed in his back as he argued with his girlfriend late Wednesday night on Detroit's east side, police said.

The stabbing took place about 11:30 p.m. on the 2900 block of East Lafayette, said Officer Dan Donakowksi, a Detroit Police Department spokesman. The area is west of Mount Elliott and north of Jefferson.

The victim and his girlfriend were arguing, police say, when the girlfriend's sister pulled out a knife and stabbed the man multiple times in his back.

Medics transported the victim to the hospital.

Police arrested the alleged attacker, a 57-year-old woman, and recovered a knife believed to have been used in the stabbing.
