A 5-year-old girl was killed and her mother wounded Thursday night in a shooting on Detroit's west side, police reported.

Investigators are working to determine how a suspect entered the family's home on Lyndon and opened fire before fleeing. WDIV-TV (Channel 4) described the incident as a home invasion, but a police commander told reporters they did not have evidence of a forced entry.

Emergency personnel rushed the girl to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. Her mother was hospitalized in serious condition early Friday.

Several other people inside the house during the shooting were not hurt, police said.

Authorities did not release a description of the suspect or other details. They were interviewing neighbors and witnesses.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department Homicide Unit at (313) 596-2260.
