A prisoner transport vehicle with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office was involved in a crash Friday morning, officials said.

The crash happened on Interstate 75 and Clay Street at about 9:30 a.m., according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Robert Dunlap, chief of jails and court operations for the sheriff's office, said he didn't have much information on the incident.

He said preliminary information he had was deputies were transporting prisoners in the van when it was rear-ended by another vehicle.

"A deputy chief is en route to the scene and I don't have all the details on it," he said. "All I know is the van was rear-ended."

According to media reports, there were two sheriff's deputies and five jail inmates in the van at the time of the crash. The reports also said the inmates were taken to a hospital to be examined.
