Detroit — Homicide detectives are investigating a double fatality on the city’s west side early Tuesday after two bodies were discovered as firefighters battled a blaze inside a house.

The fire was called in about 3:20 a.m. on the 19000 block of Fielding, said Dave Fornell, deputy commissioner of the Detroit Fire Department. The area is south of West Seven Mile and west of Evergreen.

The two bodies found are “burned beyond recognition,” and police at this point aren't even sure of the gender of the victims, let alone age or identity.

The early thinking is that the fire may have been set to mask the homicides, Fornell said.

The police run originated for “unknown reasons,” said Detroit Police Department spokeswoman Officer Holly Lowe.

The burned-out home was gutted by the fire, rendered almost see-through.
