Detroit — Failure to pay nearly $100,000 in child support has landed a man in court, according to the Michigan Attorney General's Office.

Harley K. Brown, 66, of Detroit was charged with failure to pay child support, a felony, by the Child, Elder and Family Financial Crimes Division. He was arraigned in 36th District Court in Detroit before Magistrate Dawn White, who set bond at $25,000.

Brown is alleged to owe $99,535.91 over eight years in back child support for one child.

Brown is known for his real estate holdings in Detroit, a news release from the Attorney General's Office said. In May, Brown was a part of the ownership group of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital building.

The Child, Elder and Family Financial Crimes Division works to find parents who are behind in child support payments.

“Parents who are financially able to support their children but chose not to do so must be held accountable for their actions and when the amount approaches six-figures, a felony charge is more than appropriate,” said Attorney General Bill Schuette. “Our No. 1 goal remains to make life better for Michigan kids.”
