Detroit — Be prepared to take alternative routes on portions of Interstate 94 over the next three weekends if driving near the city's east side.

The Michigan Department of Transportation reports it is conducting ongoing bridge replacement and making pavement repairs, which require closures.

The closures take place on eastbound and westbound lanes of I-94 between I-75 and Conner. They'll alternate, with one closure including both directions.

Closures begin Friday and open by 5 a.m. the following Mondays, depending on the weather.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday: Eastbound I-94 will be closed from I-75 to Conner to repair pavement. Take the detour northbound I-75 to eastbound Eight Mile to eastbound I-94.
  • 8:30 p.m. Nov. 2 to 5 a.m. Nov. 5: I-94 will be closed in both directions between Conner and I-75 so crews can put in new beams at the Gratiot bridge and haul away three pedestrian structures now closed because of their deterioration. Detours will include Eight Mile and I-75 for both directions.
  • 9 p.m. Nov. 9 to 5 a.m. Nov. 12: Westbound I-94 will be closed from Conner to I-75 to repair pavement. Detour westbound Eight Mile to southbound I-75 to westbound I-94.

While working on the full closure beginning Nov. 2, ramps to eastbound and westbound I-94 will close at 7 p.m. If traveling from one freeway to another, the interchange ramps will close at 8 p.m., with the westbound closing at 8:30 p.m. and eastbound at 9 p.m. Twenty bridge beams, each weighing 64 tons, will be set over the  freeway.

The pedestrian bridges being removed are the pedestrian overpasses on Rohn, Springfield and Helen streets.
