Detroit police are investigating a Friday non-fatal shooting that left a 29-year-old man with an injured hand, officials said.

The shooting happened at about 6:11 a.m. in the area of Plymouth Road and Vaughn Street on the city's west side, said Dontae Freeman, a Detroit Police Department spokesman.

The victim told officers he was walking down the street when he was approached by another man, Freeman said.

The second man was armed and tried to rob the victim, according to police. The two men scuffled and the weapon discharged, striking the victim in his hand, Freeman said.

The suspect fled the scene and police were called. The victim was taken to a hospital where he is listed in stable condition, officials said.

Police have no description of the suspect, Freeman said.
