Rides on Detroit's People Mover will be free on Thanksgiving Day.

Pontiac-based mortgage company United Shore said Tuesday it was covering all costs for People Mover riders from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, it said. Regular rates will be enforced Friday.

“United Shore has a lot to be thankful for and we’re happy to pay it forward by offering free rides on the Detroit People Mover this Thanksgiving,” Mat Ishbia, United Shore's president and CEO, said in a statement. “We’re a family company, and this was an opportunity to extend our community goodwill beyond Oakland County and into downtown Detroit, where so many great family traditions take place on Thanksgiving Day.”

More than 1 million are expected to be downtown for America’s Thanksgiving Parade at 9 a.m. and the Detroit Lions' football game against the Chicago Bears at 12:30 p.m.

“Over the last four years, Thanksgiving Free Fare Day on the People Mover has become a staple of Thanksgiving Day in downtown Detroit,” Barbara Hansen, general manager of the Detroit Transportation Corporation, which owns and operates the Detroit People Mover, said in a statement. “We’re thankful that United Shore has continued this tradition and are excited to bring area families together to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day festivities.”
