Detroit authorities are working to identify a body found in a fire-ravaged house Wednesday on the city's west side.

Crews spotted the remains while extinguishing the blaze in the 16100 block of Bramell about 5 p.m., said Deputy Fire Commissioner David Fornell.

The body was badly burned and officials had not yet learned the gender. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Fornell said.

It wasn't immediately clear if the house, which collapsed, had been occupied, he said.

Detroit fire officials are investigating the blaze as suspicious but did not release other details Wednesday night.
