Detroit – The Motown Museum plans to offer free child admission on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when visitors can learn about the link between the civil rights leader and hit-making record company once based in Detroit.
The Detroit museum said admission on Monday will be free for visitors under 18 when accompanied by a paid adult.
Visitors will view a video message from the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. about the connection between Motown and King. They also will learn about the company’s Black Forum label, which released King’s recordings.
Performances tributes to King also are planned by winners of Motown MIC: The Spoken Word poetry contest.
The museum is where Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. launched his music empire. The company, celebrating its 60th anniversary this month, moved to California in 1972.
