Man gunned down on west side after reports of '20 shots fired'

Detroit — Police are investigating a shooting early Wednesday morning on Detroit's west side that left a man dead.  

The shooting took place about 1:40 a.m. on the 19200 block of Birwood, north of West Seven Mile and west of Wyoming, police said, offering preliminary information. 

Police responded to a 911 call said an "excess of 20 shots fired" in the area, and found an unidentified man fatally shot. He was wearing orange gym shoes at the time, but police give no other identifiers as the investigation begins.

In addition to the victim's injuries, several cars parked in the area were hit by the gunfire.

No shooter description is immediately available, and the circumstances preceding the shooting are unknown.
