Detroit — A 35-year-old man is in critical condition, and under arrest, after police allege he crashed a stolen vehicle into the steps of a library branch of Detroit's west side.

The crash took place about 5:30 a.m. in the area of Grand River and Stoepel, west of Livernois.

Police say the man was speeding east on Grand River toward downtown when his vehicle rolled. By the time it stopped rolling, it landed on the steps of the Gabriel Richard branch of the Detroit Public Library, damaging its front steps.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and medics took him to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
