Personal info of Macomb County workers online for weeks
Mount Clemens — Macomb County says personal information about thousands of employees and family members was mistakenly available on a website for weeks.
Macomb County says it learned about the security breach in September. The Macomb Daily says the county notified employees last week and offered free enrollment in identity-theft protection programs.
Names, Social Security numbers and other information were on a website from July 31 until Sept. 10. County lawyer John Schapka says the error was made by a contractor when the county was seeking proposals for health insurance.
Schapka says the risk of identity theft is very low. He says his information was posted but he’s not taking any extra steps.
County Board Chairman David Flynn calls it a “huge mistake.” A public hearing is planned to learn more.
