An afternoon fire near the Macomb Mall destroyed a Mediterranean restaurant in Roseville, snarled traffic and kept firefighters busy for several hours on Sunday.

No one was injured in the fire first detected about 1:30 p.m. at the Malek Al Kabob restaurant on Gratiot Avenue north of 13 Mile across from the mall.

Fire units from several adjacent communities responded to the fire but could not save the restaurant that has been operating at the site for about a year, according to one of the owners, "Moe" Obaid.

"I can't believe it," Obaid said. "It's all gone. Roof. Walls. All down right to the ground."

Obaid said a crew was doing repair work up on the restaurant's roof when they noticed smoke and fire and immediately notified the Fire Department.

"We had a banquet in the back with about 75 people. Everyone left," Obaid said.

Obaid said he was at another of his restaurants in Taylor when he learned of the fire.

Employees and visitors to the mall reported traffic jams in several directions.

The fire remains under investigation. Roseville fire officials could not be reached for comment.
