Shelby Township — An early-morning traffic accident Sunday left one man dead and another in serious condition.

The incident happened about 3:45 a.m. Sunday on 23 Mile between Ryan and Shelby. Police said they found a 60-year-old Shelby Township man in his 2005 Chrysler 300, near the wreckage of a 1999 Ford Mercury SUV with a 21-year-old Troy man inside, Shelby Township Police Capt. Mark Coil said.

Firefighters needed equipment to extract both men from their vehicles before rushing them to a local hospital, where the 60-year-old was pronounced dead, and the 21-year-old was being treated for serious injuries.

“Alcohol appears to have been a factor,” Coil said.

Anyone with information is about the crash is asked to call the Shelby Township Police Department at (313) 731-2121.
