Slain Clinton Twp. party store owner laid to rest

The Detroit News

Southfield — The owner of a Clinton Township party store who was slain during a robbery was laid to rest Monday after a funeral at Mother of God Chaldean Catholic Church.

Emil Salem, 50, was fatally shot Thursday night during a robbery at Bernie’s Market on Garfield near 171/2 Mile. Salem wounded the robber during an exchange of gunfire, according to Clinton Township police.

Capt. Richard Maierle said two people were taken into custody Saturday in Toledo in connection with the robbery — a female and a male who was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds.

Maierle said the male person of interest was held on a warrant from the Michigan Department of Corrections as a parole absconder.

A warrant request for the female was being sought from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
