Toddler dies after alleged abuse by mother’s boyfriend
A 21-month-old Warren girl allegedly abused this month by her mother’s boyfriend died Thursday morning, police said.
The toddler, who police declined to name, underwent surgery and was placed on life support after the April 4 incident. She had suffered internal brain trauma, police said.
The boyfriend, Gregory Lowe, is charged with first-degree child abuse. Police will request more serious charges against Lowe on Friday, said Sgt. Robert Eidt of the Warren Police Department.
It will be up to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if Lowe will face murder charges, Eidt said.
Police arrested Lowe April 4 after an emergency call for an unresponsive child at a home in the 21000 block of La Salle.
Lowe was at home alone with the child when she sustained her injuries, police said. He told police that the girl had fallen down the stairs, but an investigation showed otherwise, police said.
“The injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome,” Eidt said.
The girl, who was removed from life support on Saturday, died at 1:33 a.m. Thursday at St. John Hospital in Detroit.
Lowe is scheduled to appear in 37th District Court in Warren on May 21.
