No injuries as suspected electrical fire strikes nursery school
St. Clair Shores — A St. Clair Shores nursery school was struck by a fire Sunday afternoon.
No one was injured in the blaze at Assumption Nursery School, which was empty at the time.
The extent of damage wasn’t known. There is smoke damage, according to the school. The school told parents in a statement Sunday night that the building would be closed Monday .
The cause of the fire, which included an explosion, is being investigated, said Lt. Joe Heythaler of the St. Clair Shores Police Department.
Authorities were waiting for DTE Energy to cut the power to the school on Marter Road, said Heythaler.
“All we know is that the fire department believes it was an electrical fire,” he said.
The school told parents in the statement that the Fire Department “found a problem in the mechanical room.”
Responding to the fire were fire trucks, including a foam truck from St. Clair Shores Fire Department and Selfridge Air National Guard Base Fire Department.
