Police have released the name of a 23-year-old man who drowned Wednesday evening at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township, authorities said.

Loyd Thomas Jr. of Warren and a companion, also in his 20s, were in a swim area at Baypoint Beach when he "became distressed" and went under, said Battalion Chief Michael Gaydos of the Shelby Township Fire Department. "His friend tried to render assistance and was overcome at that point."

Other visitors nearby rescued the friend and called 911 about 4:10 p.m., said Capt. Brenda Baker of the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Metropark police as well as fire officials from Shelby and Washington townships also were involved in the rescue effort.

The Shelby Township dive team found Thomas about 6:35 p.m., nearly 300 feet from shore, in water estimated at 12-15 feet deep, Gaydos said.

Washington Township authorities transported his friend to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Gaydos said. His condition was not known.
