A husband and wife were found dead in Sterling Heights on Thursday after an apparent murder-suicide, police said.

Officers went to a home in the 43000 block of Polo Circle about 9 a.m. for a welfare check and to follow up on a complaint of shots fired, according to a release from the Sterling Heights Police Department.

A woman told officers she had “heard a gunshot within her apartment, saw her father lying on the ground and fled to call police,” the statement read.

Checking inside, officers found a man and woman, both 44, with gunshot wounds to their heads. The weapon believed to be used in the incident was recovered.

Officers had gone to the home May 21; the man was arrested for domestic violence against his wife, police said. “The conditions of bond set in that case included a no contact order,” the statement read.

The city police department is continuing to investigate.
