St. Clair Shores — State police are investigating a fatal collision involving a 20-year-old motorcyclist who died Wednesday after crashing into a St. Clair Shores police car, authorities said.

The motorcyclist crashed into a marked patrol vehicle around 9:30 p.m. on Eight Mile between Beaconsfield and Interstate 94, St. Clair Shores police said in a statement Thursday.

“The officer was attempting to make a traffic stop on an uninvolved vehicle at the time of the crash,” police said in the statement. “This was a tragic accident and was not the result of a police pursuit.”

The motorcyclist, a St. Clair Shores resident, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:11 p.m., police said.

“Our city grieves for the family and their tragic loss of a loved one,” police said in the statement. “We cannot undo the tragedy, but we can promise a full and complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

The Michigan State Police is conducting an investigation into the crash, St. Clair Shores police said. Investigators remained on the scene after 11 p.m. Wednesday reconstructing the crash.
