Lightning strikes damage homes in Sterling Heights
Sterling Heights — Two lightning strikes Wednesday afternoon sparked housefires that caused around $90,000 in damage, according to the Sterling Heights Fire Department.
The first lightning strike hit a home just before 4:40 p.m. on the 11000 block of San Elia Drive, southwest of Plumbrook and Dodge Park Road, Fire Chief Chris Martin said in a statement Thursday. The strike created a hole in the roof and fire in the attic.
A painting contractor working in the home threw water on the flames until the fire department responded, Martin said. There was an estimated $30,000 in damage to the building and its contents.
Approximately 13 minutes later, a second lightning strike was reported less than five miles away on the 15000 block of Shiraz Court, northwest of 15 Mile and Moravian, Martin said.
Firefighters responded found flames coming from the attic of the home, Martin said. The fire was quickly extinguished.
Estimated damage to the second home and its contents is around $60,000, Martin said.
There were no injuries in either incident, he said.
