A 34-year-old man from India drowned Friday while swimming in Lake St. Clair near Harrison Township, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man, who was living in Michigan on a work visa, had been swimming behind a home in the 33000 block of North River Road during a function with colleagues, sheriff’s officials said in a statement. Attendees called 911 around 5:30 p.m. when they couldn’t locate him.

Harrison Township deputies and the Macomb County marine division started canvassing the area. The Harrison Township Fire Department dive rescue team spotted the man near the shore about 6:08 p.m.

He was immediately transported to McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff’s officials said.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of his relatives in India.

Detectives are investigating the drowning, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said.
