Shelby Township — A woman driving her child to school made a horrifying discovery Tuesday morning when she spotted a body lying in a ditch.

The body turned out to be that of an 18-year-old man who may have fallen from an electrical transmission tower located in the 56629 block of Jewell, just south of 26 Mile.

A blue article of clothing, possibly a sweatshirt, was found draped over a horizontal bar of the tower. Police have ruled out a possible hit-and-run, according to Sgt. Craig Neubacher.

“We responded along with fire and EMS but he was dead at the scene,” Neubach said. “The body was turned over to the medical examiner’s office.”

At 11 a.m., police were still on the scene, along with a number of linemen from ITC Transmission, who were clearing brush from the base of the tower before going up to remove the shirt.

Police declined to release the identity of the man pending notification of next of kin. But Neubacher said the police department had previous contacts with the teenager.
