Woman accused of firing gun in road rage incident
Mount Clemens — A 36-year-old woman was arraigned Wednesday on assault, weapons and drug charges after she allegedly fired a shot at a man during an apparent road rage incident.
Harrison Township resident India Marchea McDougal told deputies she opened fire after the man exited his 2003 Chevy pickup during an altercation in Harrison Township, approached her vehicle and tossed liquid in her face, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
She was charged in 41B District Court with assault with intent to murder, felony firearm and possession of less than 25 grams of a controlled substance.
Deputies found numerous bottles of prescription narcotics inside her vehicle, said Lt. John Michalke, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
McDougal faces life in prison on the assault charge. She received a bond of $750,000 cash or surety at arraignment and is due back in court Oct. 26.
The woman was arrested around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday after a 40-year-old male driver called 911 to report that a female motorist in a 2004 Lexus SUV opened fire following an argument while stopped at a red light on Crocker at Metropolitan Parkway, officials said.
McDougal also called police after the incident and said she opened fire because she was “scared for her life” after the man exited his truck, approached her car holding a Styrofoam cup and tossed liquid in her face.
The man, a Warren resident, told police the altercation began when he “exchanged words” with McDougal a few blocks north at Crocker and Reimold, before both motorists proceeded to the red light.
The complainant told authorities he exited his truck to confront McDougal about her driving. He said he remained on the driver’s side of his vehicle until the argument escalated and he returned to his vehicle.
Once back inside his truck, the man unrolled the passenger side window and threw a soft-drink at the woman’s SUV, he said. The woman, who is a concealed pistol license holder, fired her gun at the man’s truck.
Both simultaneously dialed 911, officials said. McDougal notified authorities that she had opened fire during an altercation and had stopped at a nearby convenience store on Harper.
Deputies located a Kel-Tec, 9 mm Luger handgun in the pocket on the driver’s side door of McDougal’s gray Lexus RX330, officials said. She was arrested and taken to the Macomb County Jail.
Evidence technicians who examined the man’s vehicle found shattered glass on the passenger side and a bullet hole through the passenger door, officials said. The bullet was retrieved from the truck’s armrest.
The man, who was not identified, is expected to face multiple misdemeanor charges, including driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and “throwing a missile” from a vehicle, Michalke said.
Sheriff’s officials have sent a warrant request to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine if charges are filed.
At least two other incidents this week involved allegedly feuding drivers.
A 24-year-old Detroit man was hospitalized late Wednesday after he was shot in an apparent road rage incident on the 21000 block of Fenkell near Lahser on Detroit’s west side, police said.
A Brandon Township man was arraigned Wednesday on assault charges following an alleged road rage incident. Oakland County sheriff’s deputies received a report of a man assaulting a woman on the shoulder of Sashabaw and Seymour Lake roads about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. According to the victim, a 21-year-old township woman, there had been an earlier road rage incident between the pair and when they stopped to confront each other, the man attacked her.
