Ray Township — A pilot walked away with minor injuries after crashing his plane Thursday evening near the Ray Community Airport, according to the Macomb County Sheriff.

The small propeller plane crashed around 6:10 p.m. on the 59800 block of Indian Trail, officials said. Deputies arrived to find the 46-year-old Clinton Township pilot receiving medical treatment from fire officials and MedStar Ambulance first responders.

He was the plane’s only occupant, officials said. He was able to walk away from the crash and suffered small lacerations to his face.

The pilot told deputies he crashed while attempting to land his Comp Air 8 Turbo Prop at the nearby Ray Community Airport at 59990 Indian Trail, officials said.

A witness told officials the plane made a “hard left turn” into the ground while approaching the airport’s runway No. 27.

A Federal Aviation Administration safety inspector arrived around 8 p.m. and took over the investigation, officials said. The federal agency was contacted about the crash by the Macomb County’s emergency dispatch center.
