A Warren resident died Thursday after she was struck by a pickup while trying to fetch a hat that had blown off in the wind, police said.

“According to witnesses, her hat blew off, she turned around to retrieve the hat and she was struck by a Ford pickup, which was westbound on Nine Mile,” said Lt. Daniel Novak.

The 58-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 5:45 p.m.

Witnesses said the woman was not at the crosswalk, Novak said.

The driver of the Ford, identified as a 56-year-old man, stopped and was interviewed, Novak said. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Police were investigating. Witnesses are asked to call the Warren Police Department’s traffic division at (586) 574-4870.
