DIA makes road trip to Utica elementary school
Shelby Township – Students at Morgan Elementary are visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts this week – without leaving the school grounds.
A 53-foot double-expandable trailer brought “DIA Away: Think Like an Artist” to students at Morgan, in the Utica Community Schools, for a visit that began Monday and runs through Thursday.
The mobile exhibit includes digital and graphic reproductions of five artworks from the DIA’s collection.
It also includes three “creativity stations” where students can explore and practice some of the ways artists think.
In one station, students could choose a scene by using a touchscreen, then manipulate visual filters to change its mood or feeling by changing colors, lighting or other visual effects. In another, they could use magnets and whiteboards to design a “fantasy transporter” as a way of exploring how everyday objects can serve different functions depending on context.
