Warren — A Michigan State Police vehicle took major damage Wednesday night at the scene of a crash on eastbound Interstate 696 near Van Dyke, state police said Thursday.

A 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by a 19-year-old from St. Clair Shores, rear-ended the trooper’s vehicle at 11:15 p.m. after driving through the flair pattern troopers laid on the road to protect the drivers in the crash.

MSP processed the driver and released him with a citation. A passenger in the driver’s vehicle was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No drugs or alcohol were involved, and none of the three troopers on the scene were hurt in the incident, said Lt. Mike Shaw.
