Warren — A 37-year-old Warren man died Thursday after he was struck by three vehicles, including one hit-and-run driver, while trying to cross Schoenherr Road at Leonard Avenue, according to Warren police.

Daniel Gary Rook initially was struck around 6:45 a.m. by a 41-year-old Clinton Township woman driving a 2009 Kia Sportage in the northbound lane furthest from the curb, police said in a statement. Officials initially reported he was a Madison Heights resident.

“It appears he crossed, not at a crosswalk,” Lt. Courtland Larry said of the crash. “It’s a pretty dark area.”

Rook was wearing all dark clothing as he attempted to cross the four-lane roadway, police said. Street lights in the area were functional at the time of the crash.

The woman driving the Kia immediately stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said. She submitted to a preliminary breath test which showed a result of 0.00.

Directly following the crash, a good Samaritan stopped along southbound Schoenherr and exited his truck to hold up traffic at the scene, police said. A red or burgundy Chrysler PT Cruiser then navigated around him and struck Rook as he lay in the roadway. A Grand Prix directly behind the PT Cruiser also continued to drive along the roadway and struck the victim, police said.

The driver of the PT Cruiser, a woman in her late 30s, stopped her vehicle after striking Rook and was rear-ended by the driver of the Grand Prix, police said. The woman briefly exited her car to yell at the other driver before returning to her PT Cruiser and fleeing the scene.

The Grand Prix driver, a 24-year-old Warren resident, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. He registered a 0.00 reading on his preliminary breath test and has told investigators he never saw Rook in the roadway as he was focused on the man directing traffic.

Rook was transported to St. John Macomb Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. His next of kin has been notified.

Police are looking for the woman who fled after striking the victim and being rear-ended at the scene. She is described as a woman in her late 30s with a thin build. She is 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-6 and had a pony tail.

Her red or burgundy PT Cruiser will have rear-end damage, police said.
