Bulk Food Marketplace in St. Clair Shores is temporarily closed and undergoing repairs after a driver accidently plowed through a front wall Friday evening, employees said.

No one was in the area of the store on Harper near Eight Mile when a customer pulled up in a car — a Mercury Grand Marquis — about 5:30 p.m., “came up over the sidewalk and right on in it,” said Nick Sand, a manager.

Sand was in a back room at the time, but “people who were here said it was very loud,” he said. The woman behind the wheel “was OK— just kind of in shock.”

The motorist, described as an elderly woman, was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries, police said. Her condition was unknown Friday night.

St. Clair Shores police would only describe the incident as an accident. An investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, staffers at the store that sells goods such as dried fruits, nuts, cereals and rice were surveying the products damaged in the dust-up. A city inspector also is expected to determine if the building is structurally sound before the doors reopen early next week, Sand said.

As startling as the accident was Friday, the store manager estimates “this is probably the fourth or fifth time someone has driven through the front, but they never caused this much damage. This is extensive.”
