A driver is in custody Friday afternoon after he and a passenger were involved in a traffic crash on Interstate 94 in St. Clair Shores, police said.

According to the Michigan State Police, troopers were called to a crash around 12:30 p.m. east of 11 Mile.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the initial story of the driver that road debris went through the windshield and injured the passenger didn’t add up with the evidence that was found on scene,” State Police Lt. Mike Shaw wrote in a statement Friday. “The driver also made statements that he and the passenger had just purchased heroin in Detroit.”

The passenger was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. He is in critical condition and may be brain dead, police said.

Troopers were trying to notify reltives Friday afternoon.

Police have not released any information about the driver or passenger.

The Michigan State Police Special Investigations Section and the Metro Post continue to investigate.

The freeway has reopened.
