Eastpointe police have arrested a 65-year-old Sterling Heights man in connection with an attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl on Tuesday afternoon.

It was about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when the girl was approached while walking home from Kelly Middle School, at Kelly and 10 Mile.

According to a statement from the Eastpointe Police Department, a white male in his 40s, with a larger build and a gray beard, pulled up to her in a green Dodge Challenger, made “vulgar comments,” and “attempted to get the child into his vehicle.”

A bystander intervened, though, and the car fled the area.

Eastpointe police said they are working with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on the case. They expect the suspect to be arraigned Thursday in 38th District Court. Police said the suspect is being cooperative.

“We would like to thank the citizens who called after witnessing this incident,” police said in a statement Wednesday. “As always, if you see something, say something.”

Anyone with information on the suspect to contact the department at (586) 445-5100, and are asking parents to remind their children to never approach strangers, or their vehicles, and to seek an adult for help or call 911 if they feel threatened.
