A deputy was injured Tuesday evening after his patrol car was struck by an alleged drunken driver who had a child in the vehicle, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy, who has been on the force for 4 1/2 years, was on the scene of a separate crash when he was struck around 7:15 p.m. on M-53 near 29 Mile Road in Washington Township, officials said. His patrol car was positioned on the shoulder of the expressway and was hit by a 37-year-old Warren woman driving a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche.

There was a 12-year-old child in the Avalanche at the time, officials said. Neither the driver nor the child was injured.

The deputy was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment to minor injuries, officials said. He was released around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Other deputies at the scene “sensed that (the driver) was intoxicated,” officials said in a statement. “After some further investigation, she was placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated.”

The suspect was processed into the Macomb County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated, child endangerment and possession of marijuana, officials said. Her name is being withheld pending arraignment.
