The Detroit News

One man is dead and a second injured after both were hit Wednesday while crossing Gratiot in Clinton Township.

The men were crossing Gratiot south of Hall Road at about 6 a.m. when they were struck by a Dodge Ram pickup traveling north. The accident killed a 56-year-old man from Clinton Township. His 36-year-old companion from Eastpointe is in critical condition at McLaren Macomb Hospital.

Police say the men were crossing the street from the east side of the road at Capitol when they were struck by the red pickup in the left-hand lane. The driver stopped, called police and tried to help the men. He stayed at the scene of the accident as police and emergency personnel arrived.

The driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according the police’s preliminary investigation.

Police said the section of Gratiot where the accident happened is five lanes wide and is poorly lit. The men were not crossing at an intersection or crosswalk. The speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

Anyone with information related to the accident is asked to call Clinton Township police at (586) 493-7802 or Sgt. C. Allis at (586) 615-2525.
