Sterling Heights firefighters are being credited with saving a baby duck after it fell through a sewer grate by using a creative rescue tool: a french fry strainer.

The incident happened Monday at the Bank of America on Schoenherr near Lakeside Mall, according to a post on the Sterling Heights City Hall Facebook page.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found that one duckling was trapped in the sewer while the mother and other babies hid nearby in the bushes,” the post stated. “The firefighters borrowed a french fry strainer from the nearby McDonald’s and taped it to a Pike Pole.”

The firefighters were successful the first time they used their new rescue tool, officials said. The duckling was then reunited with its family.

The city posted an 18-second video on its Facebook page Tuesday showing firefighter Tom Nowicki scooping up the duck with the strainer. The post also thanks firefighter Sean Watson and Lt. Kelly Burgan for their involvement in the rescue.
