Authorities: 70-year-old wrong-way driver dies in crash

Washington Township — Authorities say a 70-year-old woman who was driving the wrong way on a road has died after a head-on crash.

The Macomb County sheriff’s department says Maria Pierce of Shelby Township was heading south in the northbound lanes of Van Dyke highway in Washington Township around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday when her car collided with a northbound car.

The department says a 52-year-old Port Austin man who was driving the northbound car was trapped inside and taken to a hospital for treatment after being freed by rescuers.

The crash is under investigation. Investigators are seeking witnesses.
