Gas leak forces evacuation of Macomb Twp. homes

Several Macomb Township homes were evacuated for nearly four hours Thursday because of a gas leak, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

A plumbing company working to fix a sump pump accidentally struck the gas line after 11 a.m. on the 16000 block of White Plains near Garfield, Lt. John Michalke said. The crew was working in the front yard of an area home.

“Our deputies were dispatched there to assist the Macomb Township Fire Department,” he said. “They blocked an intersection and Macomb Township and evacuated approximately 10 houses on each side of White Plains.”

Residents were allowed to return to their homes around 2:40 p.m., said Debra Dodd, spokeswoman for Consumers Energy. Repair work was complete at 5:45 p.m.
